Possible Complication from Erbium Laser Peel

1 - Scar formation on occasion, small areas may show thickening from underlying collagen formation. These areas are treated with an injection of dilute steroid.

2 - Milia mall, white pimple-like bumps on the skin occasionally occur. They are treated by simple removal and are rare.

3 - Spider veins small visible blood vessels are not generally removed with this treatment. They can be treated before or after laser resurfacing.

4 - Skin loss this is an extremely rare occurrence, most likely occurring in smokers especially when combined with other surgery such as face-lifting. If it occurs, secondary scar revision may be necessary. These risks will be discussed with your doctor.

How does the Erbium laser peel work?

Energy from the laser ablates or removes a superficial layer of damaged skin. Fresh, vibrant new skin will replace the damaged skin through a peeling process that takes 5 to 10 days. The Sciton laser allows Dr. Robinson the ability to customize the settings for each patient's skin condition resulting in optimal individual results.

What areas can be treated?

Most skin areas can be treated. Popular areas are the face & neck. Your needs will be discussed with Dr. Robinson at a consultation appointment.

How long will it take to recover?

Your healing time will depend upon your actual treatment depth. Two to three weeks of should be expected for the deepest peel. You will experience bleeding and oozing the first few days with redness lasting several weeks. Swelling and itching may last 7 to 10 days. Healing time varies with each patient,

What should I expect after treatment?

Bleeding and oozing are most prevelant the first two days. Post laser dressing is recommended throughout the day to help ease the sunbrun tight feeling. The first facial cleansing will be scheduled with our esthetician the following morning. New skin generation will take 7 to 10 days. After 7 to 10 days, makeup may be applied to cover residual redness. Redness will fade to a pink color over several weeks. It may take 8-10 weeks for total healing to occur.

Will it be uncomfortable?

Pain medication will be available for deep peel paitents, but most find Tylenol and Benedryl sufficient. Discomfort from burning, swelling, oozing and tightness may last several days. Proper cleansing and continued laser dressing application will help ease this discomfort. Dr. Robinson will discuss your options to properly manage any discomfort or pain.

Is there a risk?

Following the correct aftercare procedures prescribed by Dr. Robinson will reduce the risk of infection. Follow-up visits will ensure proper healing.

What will happen during the procedure?

Dr. Robinson will administer anesthesia and place titanium ocular shields in your eyes for optimum protection. The laser beam will be delivered through a computer controlled device that automatically scans the area of your skin being treated. Earplugs are also placed by Dr. Robinson, but you may hear a snapping or popping noise as the laser beam gently removes the outer skin cells. Procedure time is dependent on treatment area and peel depth, but most treatments are completed in 60 minutes..

What aftercare will I need?

You will be given a post laser skin care bag containing product needed for cleansing and mosturizing during the recovery period. It is important to follow the specific directions provided with the product. Following post care protocol will minimize your risk of infection and ensure the shortest healing time.

Your new skin will be very sensitive to ultra-violet light and you must avoid sun exposure until fully healed. Proper sun screen and hat are recommended when going outdoors.
