This procedure is designed to augment the chin, making it longer and more prominent. It is usually done in patients with a small or recessive chin line. It is most commonly combined with a rhinoplasty (nose job), facelift or liposuction under the chin. Implants are solid medical grade plastic contoured to fit the jaw and are ordered specifically for each patient. Computer imaging is used to decide the size and shape.

Procedure 
After sedation (see Anesthesia for more details), the chin area is anesthetized with local anesthetic. A one-inch incision is made (usually inside the mouth where the lower lip attaches near the front teeth). This prevents any external scar. The implant is placed on the front surface of the chin bone and secured in place with sutures that close the incision. These are absorbable, dissolving types that are gone in seven to ten days. 

Recovery
There are no bandages or dressings. Some swelling and numbness occurs over the chin, which is mostly gone in five to ten days. Bruising is unusual and discomfort is minimal. Antibiotics are taken for ten days. Patients may eat some soft food for the first few days and resume physical activity in ten days. Photos are taken at approximately two to three months.
